Developing a strong relationship between
two people allows them to express mutual
respect and love for each other.
Unfortunately, when a couple is involved
in a toxic relationship that is marked
by codependency, emotional violence, or
domestic abuse, it can be emotionally
and physically damaging and sometimes
even fatal. Finding the strength
to leave a negative relationship and
seek counseling can result in a gradual
recovery of physical and emotional
health for abused individuals and their
loved ones. This video program
contains graphic material relating to
domestic abuse that may not be suitable
for all audiences. Teachers are
encouraged to review this program before
using it in their classroom.

This video was adapted from an original
play written by Daniel S. Kehde by
Jaguar Educational and Producer/Director
Greg Harpold. Kehde and Harpold.
They have previously collaborated on
award-winning educational dramas
depicting teenage experiences with AIDS,
date rape, disabilities, and hate
crimes. The program tells the
story of a teen relationship that seems
like love, but is eventually taken over
by possessiveness, jealousy, and anger,
and begins to take precedence over daily
events such as school, homework, soccer
practice, parties, and other
friendships. Throughout the
program, viewers are introduced to the
warning signs of an abusive
relationship. The age of the
actors makes the program ideal for
secondary school students, but it can
also be used for a younger or a more
general audience. The story is
reinforced by interview segments with
domestic violence counselors who make
connections between events in the drama
and the patterns of abuse evident in
real-life situations. The video
helps young people recognize the
characteristics of a dangerous
relationship, and makes the point that
it is NEVER too late to get help.

Emotional abuse can be difficult to
define, since there may be no physical
signs. It is clear that this form of
destructive behavior is based on power
and control, and many teens suffer
emotional abuse from their peers, family
and other trusted adults. It can
affect their self-esteem and greatly
impair psychological development and
social interaction, manifesting itself
in many ways. These can include social
withdrawal, severe anxiety, fearfulness,
depression, physical complaints,
substance abuse and the inability to
feel and express emotions appropriately.
Emotional abuse can occur when parents
or teens in relationships constantly
criticize and threaten, resulting in
damage to self-esteem and feelings of
self-worth. In this program, Teens
discuss their experiences with emotional
abuse, how they recognize it, and the
effect and consequences it has now and
may have throughout their lives.
Interspersed with the Teen discussions
are valuable insights and guidance from
clinical psychologist Dr Deborah Cooper.
