This Level C "Rookie Reader" contains
rhyming stanzas that advise kids to wash
their hands, avoid eating wild berries
or sitting in wet paint. In soft
illustrations, multi-ethnic children
clutch adults' hands, climb trees
carefully, sit correctly in chairs, tie
their shoes, wear bike helmets, and
buckle their seatbelts. The cautionary
advice blends perfectly with the muted
art. The overall message shifts the
text's emphasis away from "don't do
this" to an upbeat ending: "Always be
safe in whatever you do. Nothing is
quite as important as you." This is an
important, educational book for any
library or home school collection.

This friendly, informative book for kids
aged from 4 to 7 acknowledges kids'
fears and makes them aware of things
they need in order to feel safe in

crossing a road, to wear special
clothing for sports, to know their
parents' names, phone number, and
emergency numbers, and many other
details. This is an
easy-to-understand series of books for
younger children. Each title
explores emotional issues and discusses
the questions that arise among kids of
preschool through early school age.
Written by a child counselor and
psychotherapist, each title promotes
positive interaction among children,
parents, and teachers. The books
in this series are written in simple
language that makes sense to younger
kids. It also features a guide for

We know that school bus
drivers are very well-trained, but they
do not have control over other driver's
actions. Because of this,
communication between the students and
the driver is very necessary. In
this video, Bobby, a third grader, copes
with some events where he is treated
with a lack of respect by some other
students. On his third day at
school, he is excited about a good
report from his teacher and is eager to
share it with his mother.
Unfortunately, Bobby makes a big mistake
when he does not follow the instructions
for crossing safely in front of the bus.
A distracted driver ignores safety
procedures, and Bobby is hit by the car.
While Bobby's friends and classmates
wait to learn about the outcome, viewers
have time to reflect on the importance
of following safe procedures. A
joint venture between the Ohio
Association of Pupil Transportation and
The Broken Toy Project, this color
unrated educational drama on DVD
features students from the Worthington
City Schools. This intense,
disturbing film makes it a good
discussion-starting tool for children
fifth grade, and under. While the
procedures followed in the film are
based on Ohio rules, students and
drivers in all states can benefit from
viewing this film.

Dottie Raymer's Staying Home Alone
prepares kids for those times when they
have the house all to themselves.
It emphasizes safety, but the tone is
not didactic. Instead, important
information is made kid-friendly through
engaging graphics and an accessible
format, with lots of sidebars. The
opening chapter, which addresses house
rules and assesses a young person's
readiness for this new responsibility,
is especially helpful.
Additionally, there are chapters on
dealing with siblings, handling tricky
situations, and knowing who to call for
specific emergencies. Lauren
Scheuer's cartoon illustrations reflect
the target audience, which are
middle-school girls, but boys, too, will
find this an valuable guide.

In this educational safety video, there
are half a dozen scenarios where younger
and older kids discuss what you should
do if an adult you're not sure about
comes to your door when you are home
alone, or a stranger asks for help, or
your parent is late to the appointed
pick up place, or you meet someone scary
or creepy, or someone tries to hurt you,
or people want to touch you in places
they shouldn't. Would your
children or students know what to do in
these situations? This video
contains sensible strategies that are
driven home through repetition and peer
reinforcement. By using a catchy,
easy to remember song, kids will be able
to make the right choices when it comes
stranger safety.
