EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL ABUSE
EDUCATIONAL BOOKS AND
VIDEOS
Child abuse is a harmful action on a
child or the neglect of a child. Child
abuse can be emotional, physical,
sexual, or neglect. Most abused children
suffer emotional rather than physical
damage. Many abused or neglected
children will grow up to become an
abusive parent themselves. Whether the
abuse is emotional, physical, sexual, or
neglect the scars can be devastating and
last a lifetime. Child abuse is a
serious problem. If you suspect a child
is being abused or neglected, you should
call the police or your local child
welfare agency immediately.
Emotional abuse includes verbal abuse.
An emotionally abused child may show
symptoms of aggression or withdrawal,
may be afraid to go home, or may shy
away from parents, caregivers, or other
adults.
Physical abuse can include striking,
shaking, pushing, throwing, pinching,
choking or biting a child. A physically
abused child may show symptoms of
unexplained or repeated injuries such as
bruises, burns or welts, unreasonable
explanation of injuries, and fearful
behavior. Many physically abusive
parents and caregivers insist that their
actions are simply forms of discipline.
Sexual abuse can be physical, such as inappropriate fondling, touching and
actual sexual penetration. It can also be emotionally abusive such as forcing a
child is to undress or exposing a child to adult sexual content. A sexually
abused child may show symptoms such as the child claiming he/she was sexually
mistreated, bruises on genital or rectal area, difficulty eating and sleeping,
or excessive crying or sadness. Sexually abused children and their families need
immediate professional intervention and treatment.
