AUTISM AND LEARNING DISABILITY BOOKS
About one out of every 150 children has a form of autism and even more have some
sort of learning disability. If your child has autism or a learning disability
he/she is not alone. Autism is a brain disorder that often makes it hard to
communicate with and relate to others. Symptoms usually emerge before a child is
3 years old. Many times parents first notice that their toddler has not started
talking yet and is not acting in age appropriate ways. People can have many
different kinds of behaviors, from mild to severe.
Learning disabilities are problems that affect the brain's ability to receive
process, analyze, or store information. They are not related to your child's
intelligence. These problems can make it difficult for a child to learn quickly.
Some learning disabilities can make it difficult for children to read, write,
spell, or solve math problems. There are many kinds of learning disabilities.
Many children affected by learning disabilities have more than one kind. Some of
the more common learning disabilities include dyslexia (trouble with reading and
writing), dyscalculia (trouble with math), and dysgraphia (trouble forming
letters).
Treatment for autism and other learning disabilities involves special behavioral
training including positive reinforcement. With early treatment, most children
learn to relate better to others as they grow up. An important part of your
child's treatment is making sure that all family members get training on their
particular problem and learn how to manage the symptoms. Training can reduce
family stress and help your child function better. Read as many books as
possible on the subject. Take advantage of every kind of help you can find. Talk
to your doctor about what help is available where you live. They are many autism
and learning disability organizations and support groups available.
