GRIEF AND TRAGEDY BOOKS AND VIDEOS
Grief and tragedy for children is a
difficult and an unpleasant situation.
Grieving or mourning children are likely
to feel different than others and very
alone. They may conceal deep emotional
distress, pain and fear. Children
express grief in different ways than
adults do. They tend to fluctuate in and
out of intense emotions, rather than
remain in sustained periods of
depression as many adults do. Many
grieving children experience regression,
temper tantrums, fears, and mood swings.
Grief could be triggered by death of a
loved one or even a even a cherished
pet.
For many children, their first real
experience with loss occurs when their
pet dies.
When a child loses a loved one to death,
the loss can have a profound effect on
that child lasting the rest of his life.
For most children, death is a new
experience. And like all new
experiences, the unknown can be
confusing and frightening to them. Young
children may not understand what death
really means. Many young children might
see death as temporary and reversible,
like cartoon characters who die and come
to life again. Older children think more
like adults about death.
When a loved one dies, children need
consolation, love, support, and
affection. A child who appears to be
overwhelmed by their grief may require
professional guidance.
